HYPNOSIS: ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTIONS
WHAT IS HYPNOSIS?
Hypnosis is a state of mind in which your subconscious mind becomes very suggestible.
HOW DOES HYPNOSIS WORK?
Hypnosis works safely and effectively. By moving from the beta brain wave level (your wide-awake state) into the alpha, theta, or delta brain wave (a more relaxed state of consciousness), properly worded suggestions are easily accepted at a subconscious level.
WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE TO BE HYPNOTIZED?
Since most hypnosis (especially when using cassette tapes) is accomplished through a relaxation process, it feels good. Most people feel very relaxed. You DO NOT feel weird, strange, dizzy, or as if you're in a "trance".
WHAT IF I CAN'T BE HYPNOTIZED?
Almost anyone who has the desire and is willing to follow a few simple instructions CAN be hypnotized. Best subjects have average to high intelligence. Strong-willed people are excellent subjects. A very low I.Q., lack of desire, and unwillingness to cooperate with the hypnotist's instructions will make hypnosis difficult.
WHAT IF I DON'T GO VERY DEEP?
Depth has nothing to do with the effectiveness of the therapy. Many people actually seem to benefit more from a light to mid-range level of relaxation.
WHAT IF I GET "STUCK" AND CAN'T WAKE UP?
You can't get stuck. You can generally bring yourself fully awake whenever you want. A subject who is very deep may drift into sleep and if no one awakens them, would eventually awaken on their own.
WILL I REMEMBER WHAT HAPPENED DURING THE SESSION?
Most people DO remember all or most of the session. Some deep level subjects feel like they've slept and are therefore unaware of what was said, although the subconscious never sleeps and hears it all.
IS IT SMART TO LET SOMEONE CONTROL MY MIND?
A hypnotist cannot make you do anything you don't want to do. Your subconscious mind will not accept suggestions in conflict with your desires, morals, or beliefs.
WILL I TELL ALL MY SECRETS?
No. Hypnosis does not cause a compulsion to "tell all" nor is it a truth serum. In fact, many people are surprised to find that you can lie while under hypnosis. In most sessions, there is no need for the subject to talk, but rather relax and listen to the hypnotist's suggestions.
DOES HYPNOSIS ALWAYS WORK?
In various degrees, hypnosis CAN work for everyone because we all have a subconscious mind. Hypnosis is a tool you can use to tap the power within you. For some it works like magic! Others will find that with patience and persistence, their subconscious mind can be coaxed into making the changes they desire.
HOW MANY SESSIONS ARE NECESSARY?
Many people only need one session and can use their cassette tape or CD for follow-up. Certain problems may require a series of sessions. If you are using a cassette tape as self-hypnosis without an actual session, you must use it regularly and consistently (often for a specific period of time) in order to see results. The tapes come with written instructions. You are also invited to call Ed Benjamin's office for details on specific subjects.
